Depression is a ongoing cycle that builds up and shocking will not take it away. You may have to deal with it all of your life but there are medicines and counseling just make sure you stick with it and want it. You will make it through. Try prayer, support groups, and know that you can only depend on God.

I have been around several people who have done this as a VERY last resort, and say it works….but not forever, as have met some coming back to have it repeated. Have you tried all other means first? Presume you must have as it is usally a last resort, when you don’t respond to any meds…but now many new meds out for depression; I would try any / all of those b4 the drastic shock treatment!!

Only as a last resort. I would trust the advice of a professional over all of us on Yahoo Answers though, that’s for sure.

Sometimes it’s the only recourse people have after years of unsuccessful treatment for depression. My psychiatric nursing professor had a friend who has had electroconvulsive therapy, and it was the only thing that ever helped her depression.

I know someone who had the shock treatment for another kind of mental illness and he said it was really relaxing. Didn’t make any difference with his illness though

I suggest having a group of people use tazer guns on you. Nothing better than 50,000 volts running through your body to zap the depression right out.

He@# no! Some people I know have it, and pills work just fine. Maybe you don’t have the right kind of antidepressant pills for you, or the right doseage. Check it out, why would you want to get shocked?
If some doctor says that’s all that will help you, get a seond, third and fourth opinion.

Absolutely not. Electro-convulsive therapy (shock treatment)is a barabaric treatment which should be used only as a very last resort: if at all. Nobody understands what this electrical shock does to the brain – not to its physiology ,its pharmacology, or even to its basic structure. This is an archaic treatment with tremendous risks and should be relegated instantly to medical history.

only if I tried all the other options and none of them worked. and I’d still have some doubts about it :-)
in my naivity I still believe in the healing power of love and friendship and orienting your energy and thoughts towards good deeds

There are many other treatments for depression. Now doctors have a good list of medications to treat depression, including counseling. I am unaware that shock treatment is a recognized treatment.
